Every year greater than 23 million patients have surgery and experience surgical pain. The U.S.Agency for Healthcare Policy & Research(AHCPR)developed guidelines to provide a scientific base of knowledge for acute pain management. The Joint Commission of Accreditation for Hospital Organizations(JCAHO)designed pain management standards directly related to organizational certification and patient outcomes. Professional pain organizations further advance the science by creating standards, outcome research and tools to assess and manage pain in the acute setting. Research validates that treating acute pain reduces the incidence of chronic pain in the future. This descriptive, correlational study investigates the impact of patient and family education on pain assessment and management in the post operative setting. The sample(n=436)was drawn from an University,orthopedic surgical patient population over a year's time. A chart review of 100 established the current pain assessment, management and educative practice. Every fifth orthopedic surgical patient was educated on pain with a module to empower patients and family regarding pain management. All patient's charts were reviewed at four intervals. Established patient goals were utilized to measure results. The educated patients demonstrated increased empowerment in pain management through improved communication, decreased pain levels, increased activity and increased documented pain assessments via tools.Surgical goals were reached with improved patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. Greater than 100 patients accessed the pain resource provider. The goals of the study were achieved through improved pain education for providers, patients and clinicians.A collaberative perioperative education plan is planned for the future.
