Service-Learning and Transcultural Practica: A Dynamic Partnership for the 21st Century

College and university professors have a duty to prepare students to meet their obligations as a society member.The best way to achieve this goal is to provide a transcultural practicum with a strong emphasis on service learning. Such a practicum would assist students in preparing to meet the challenges of working in a global society. Hilosky, Moore, and Reynolds (1999) define service-learning programs as programs integrating academic and professional skill development with service to the community(p.143). Boyer (1994) states that the university needs to encourage students to connect theory to practice. A service learning/transcultural practicum will allow students to apply the information they have learned in the classroom. The authors, nursing instructors at Eastern Kentucky University, offer a two-week elective practicum for nursing students to go to Haiti to provide medical care. During the practicum, students are able to enhance their clinical skills and to use their nursing knowledge. The most important benefit provided by these types of practica is the students' opportunity to introspectively examine their thoughts and feelings about different culture groups. They reflect on their experiences through daily journals and discussion groups with instructors. Hilosky, et. al., 1999) notes the importance of learning from reflection. All students who take this course comment on how it gives them more sensitivity and empathy for patients of another culture. This empathy will further reinforce their sense of civic responsibility and hopefully, give them the impetus to do more service learning in the future.
