In today's health care environment, practitioners must be able to access the latest versions of the statutes and regulations governing their practice. They must also be comfortable interacting with officials in government in order to shape the legislation that affects the health care they provide. Nursing students may not be familiar with the workings of government, particularly state government. They may also be intimidated by governmental officials and believe they are not approachable.
Teaching strategies used at the University of Maryland School of Nursing are designed to give students experience in finding laws and regulations and using them to develop policies for their practice. Students also have an opportunity to interact with elected officials and to observe sessions of the state legislature, with the goal of making government seem more accessible.
