A Model for the Intentional Use of Vibrational Energies to Affect Learning, Healing, and Human Growth

Learning Objective #1: Describe how energy from complementary therapies is processed by the brain and results in predictable movement on the autonomic nervous system continuum
Learning Objective #2: Explain how to select a complementary nursing intervention to achieve a specific learning, healing, or human growth goal

Complementary therapies used by nurses and others generate vibrational energy that fuels the chemical and electrical activities of the brain. A major result is movement towards the sympathetic or parasympathetic pole of the autonomic nervous system continuum. A theoretical model was developed which explores the relationship of environmental and therapeutic energy sources to the chemial and electrical functions of the brain/body. The model evolved from the analysis of a concept map after a multidiscliplinary literature review. A highlight of the model is the concept of body rhythms of the brain-heart-breathing as parallel manifestations of autonomic nervous system activity. The value to nursing is the availability of a rationale for the intentional use of environmental energy to produce a desired state which promotes learning, healing, and human growth. An advantage of the model is its diversity. The model is currently in use for research projects on sound therapy and sequential processing . It is the framework for a new online course on music interventions for nursing. It has also been decor of a new nursing building on campus.
