A Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advanced Education Nursing Program award created a linkage between Yale School of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery Specialty, Griffin Hospital, and the Naugatuck Valley. The purpose of the project is to significantly strengthen the nurse-midwifery specialty by increasing the number and depth of primary care clinical experiences in the curriculum through the development of a full-scope nurse-midwifery clinical site.Through another HRSA grant, Griffin Hospital created the Valley Access Program to develop a comprehensive care network through a computerized tracking system that streamlines the referral process. The program is composed of 26 partners from within and outside of the hospital. This past fall, these combined projects have received recognition as a National Community Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (CCOE) as part of the program funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. This recognition and funding provides resources to community-based programs that unite promising approaches in women’s health across six components: health services delivery, particularly preventive services; training for health care professionals and other staff; community-based research; public education and outreach; leadership development for women; and technical assistance to other communities that want to replicate the program.
