Background: Studies have shown that medication errors among experienced nurses and nursing students are not uncommon in clinical settings. This may reflect a poor mathematical competency and also an inadequate preparation in administering drugs amongst nurses. Administering a wrong medication or an inaccurately calculated dosage are serious errors for which nurses are legally liable. Mastery of medication dosage and solution calculation is an essential component for safe nursing practice. It is the requirement of our school that all undergraduate nursing students have to obtain a score of 100% from a drug test before they can graduate. Since the curriculum did not include any adjunct program which could provide on-going drug exercises for the nursing students, this project aimed to develop and use a web-based program to motivate and facilitate students’ learning.
Method and result: The project team included teaching staff who were teaching different years of nursing students. The team developed different categories of drug questions based on data obtained from clinical cases to ensure clinical relevance of the questions. Validation of the questions was done in two phases. In the first phase, two other members of our department validated each category of questions. After revisions were made, the second phase would begin by inviting external validators to review the questions. Each category of questions was validated by at least two external experts in that area. Before the website was put to use, trial run was conducted to ensure the website was working well and students knew how to attend the questions on-line. The usefulness of the website on learning and assessing of nursing students was evaluated by feedback from students by questionnaire. The result showed that students generally found the website useful and convenient for them to learn independently.
