Learning Objective #1: Describe a model for community based pediatric nursing services.
Learning Objective #2: Plan the integration of pediatric community based care locally and globally

Background: Nursing education is increasingly focusing on community based health care experiences for nursing students in non-traditional settings. This change in focus provides nursing faculty with opportunities to develop innovative learning experiences. The changes in the health care system, focusing on community based care, have resulted in pediatric community based experiences for nursing students becoming an essential component of the clinical practicum. Concepts that can be taught effectively in the community include health promotion, illness prevention, health teaching, therapeutic communication, skill development, assessment and screening, growth and development, and client advocacy.

Methodology: A University School of Nursing incorporated a pediatric primary health care experience to increase access to nursing services for culturally diverse, underserved, and unserved children and families in community settings. A model to develop and implement community based pediatric primary health care was the result of expanding the clinical experience.

Conclusion: This model proved to be effective for increasing access and services to vulnerable populations and providing innovative community-based student experiences. The model can be adapted locally and globally.
