Purpose:
The Army Trauma Training Center was created to measure clinical readiness of the US Army Forward Surgical team. The Army is no longer in the business of trauma care. Trauma care is provided at regional level I trauma centers across the country. The Army needed a partnership with a civilian trauma center to train and validate clinical competency of trauma teams. Objectives: The objectives of the Army Trauma Training Center are to evaluate and measure in forward surgical teams, trauma fund of knowledge; clinical judgment; organizational and leadership skills; and experience in terms of volume and variety of cases. The mission of the forward surgical team is to provide pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative trauma care. The personnel of the forward surgical team include: general surgeons, an orthopedic surgeon, certified registered anesthetists, critical care and emergency registered nurses, a peri-operative nurse, surgical scrub technicians, licensed practical nurses, medics, and an administrator. Experience: The Army Trauma Training Center was a collaborative mission for one subject matter expert from each functional area for the forward surgical team and an educational research nurse. The program was set up using memorandum of understanding with the civilian hospital. Each subject matter expert oriented in their functional area and integrated with the trauma center staff. The subject matter experts worked with the educational research nurse to create and modify measurement tools to evaluate and measure in forward surgical teams, trauma fund of knowledge; clinical judgment; organizational and leadership skills; and experience in terms of volume and variety of cases. Outcome: The subject matter experts have integrated into their functional areas and the staff of the trauma center have assisted in ensuring good training experience for the Army medical personnel.
