Learning Objective #1: Describe journey mapping as an empowerment evaluation tool | |||
Learning Objective #2: Identify the usefulness of journey mapping for nursing education programs |
A New Evaluation Tool. Traditional evaluation data related to courses, faculty, and teaching technologies are abundant, and student burden related to gathering these data increases yearly. Yet a meaningful description of what students experience and learn across courses and over time is not available. Journey Mapping (JM) is one tool from a methodology called Outcome Engineering, designed by Kibel(1999; 2001) specifically for complex, evolving programs that are spirit-building and asset-based; build human and organizational capacity; and focus on behaviors they want to grow rather than deficits. JM is a real-time internet-based reporting system that promotes reflective practice and continuous learning for students.
Use of JM. This tool is used in the UNMC Health Systems Nurse Specialist (HSNS) program to assist students to identify key learning experiences throughout the curriculum in relation to program outcomes and competencies. Introduced in August 2002, HSNS students use the JM tool to promote learning through reflection about their experiences and to facilitate development of professional identity. Students submit detailed, descriptive journal entries on-line monthly and track their progress in achieving competencies and outcomes. Faculty review summaries of journal entries to identify patterns appearing for individual students or for subspecialties (Nursing Administration, Nursing Informatics, & Public/Community Health Nursing); faculty can also create “real-time” reports that summarize the most recent & best work of the program.
Results of Implementation. Data obtained from JM increases faculty understanding of student learning experiences and facilitates improvement of academic advisement and HSNS curricula development. The tool helps to create a partnership between faculty and students by sharing the responsibility and accountability for creating learning experiences that are meaningful to the student while meeting program outcomes.
Next Steps. An evaluation of JM is currently in progress. Information from this evaluation will be used to refine the Journey Mapping implementation process.
