Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics: A Partnership with Education and Practice

Susan Newbold, MS, RNBC, FAAN, University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD, USA, Carol Bickford, PhD, RN, BC, American Nurses Association, Washington, DC, USA, and M. Kathleen Smith, MScEd, RN, BC, Independent Consultant, Gaithersburg, MD, USA.
Learning Objective #1: Describe how the Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics links practice and scholarship by offering traditional education to informatics nurses
Learning Objective #2: Identify how the Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics faculty has partnered with diverse organizations to conduct an award-winning informatics continuing-education event

Prior to the commencement of this informatics continuing education event, there were only a handful of conferences in the United States dedicated to educating nurses about nursing informatics. Most informatics nurses leaned their trade “on the job” and not in a traditional education setting. This event was created in 1995 as a means to provide a traditional continuing education event to nurses who otherwise learned their roles as informatics nurses on the job. In addition to education, the WINI offers the opportunity for informatics nurses to network and share ideas. Many times the informatics nurse is the only one in a particular role in the organization therefore the nurse has no one to share tips and techniques about the position.

WINI was awarded the Sigma Theta Tau International Information Technology Award for Knowledge Advancement in 2001. Over 1500 nurses have attended the WINI in the thirty-five workshops held to this date. There are at least nine more scheduled for 2003. The events are held in unique partnerships with vendors, nursing informatics groups, and schools of nursing in the United States and Canada.

Attendees will learn about the development of the WINI which may be applicable to nurses considering the development of other continuing education events. Also nurses interested in informatics can explore how this innovative course was developed to serve the needs of a set of nurses.
