The word "dance" is increasingly used to describe relationships in business, politics and healthcare. Whether conceived as a metaphor or method, dance can serve as a catalyst for shifting ways of knowing, being and relating in the world - specifically expanding unity of mind/body/spirit/space of self, others and the world. Unity and expanded consciousness are synonyms for health; thus, dance can foster health. Healthcare providers are recognizing that relationship-centered care is foundational to health. Nursing has struggled to provide comprehensive definitions for "nursing" and the "nurse/patient relationship." Esthetic knowing and inquiry are gaining popularity as means of expanding dimensions of understanding human experience. Dance is acknowledged as an integrating phenomenon. When dance theory and terminology are applied to the nurse/patient relationship, relationship nuances become definable. A creative synthesis of the theories of Rogers, Watson, Parse, Boykin adn Schoenhofer, Chinn and Watson, Laban and Bartenieff contribute to the concept of compassionate patterning - a literal and metaphorical dance which is postulated to foster and manifest expanding wholeness/health - the goal of nurse/patient relationships. Using Labananalysis, the movement theories and principles developed by Rudolf Laban, the language of movement can be used to enhance the understanding of relationship dynamics with self, others and world. Relationship outcomes are portrayed as 'process' being the product. The dynamics of relationship can be described by using the language of movement; thereby enhancing recognition of the subtle and essential qualities of nursing interactions.
