Learning Objective #1: Understand how diversity plays a central role at the Children's Center at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital
Learning Objective #2: Familiarize others with specific tools used in the Newcomer Clinic

Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJH) has a legacy in serving a diverse population; responding to the needs of the community, demonstrating international leadership in culturally sensitive health care. The Children's Centre at MSJH (CCMSJH) operates as a unique partnership with BC Children's Hospital (BCCH)- an established link between the pediatric provincially facility and a community general hospital. In meeting the needs of our multi-ethnic, multi-faith and multi-lingual community, the Newcomer Clinic is one example of interdisciplinary, collaborative care for children and families in need.

Vancouver has the second highest concentration of immigrants in Canada, comprising 44.9% of the city's total population. Within the last 15 years, a total of almost 284, 000 immigrants settled in the lower mainland. The Newcomer Clinic supports immigrant and refugee children and families who require a variety of services. The children are referred from the community Bridge Clinic, from health care providers, teachers and others. The interdisciplinary team comprised of a pediatrician, family support worker, nurse, interpreter, and other supports as required, provides specialized pediatric care, filling a gap and bridging people, services and resources. The complexity of the issues that the families bring to the clinic include the healing of injuries sustained from weapons of war, infectious disease exposure and lack of immunizations. Clearly, education and support in a culturally sensitive manner are integral to the work of our team.

The presentation will highlight: the history of the leadership MSJH has demonstrated in diversity care, the partnership agreement between MSJH and BCCH, and the work of the Newcomer Clinic at the CCMJSH. In embracing and valuing diversity, we make a difference to the future - our children.
