Using Music as a Nursing Intervention

Carole Cayer, MS, MN, School of Nursing, School of Nursing, Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, FL, USA
Learning Objective #1: Describe a four-step method for choosing when and how to use music as a therapeutic nursing intervention
Learning Objective #2: Use two tools to select specific music to achieve an intended, therapeutic purpose

The presentation will demonstrate how to choose music and how to play it effectively to provide a therapeutic nursing intervention. The experience of music is common to people of all cultures and ages. The brain responds in predictable ways to the physiological and psychological elements provided by music. The presentation will include how to use tools called "Musical Menu Suggestions" and Music Prescriptions". Specific music resources will be provided along with criteria for selection music. Using the framework and resources identified in the presentation, nurses will be able to explore the therapeutic use of music for themselves, their families, their clients and colleagues. Human function can be enhanced by intentional use of therapeutic sound. The result is enhanced learning, healing and human growth.
