Service Learning: A Partnership between Community Health Nursing and a Correctional Health Community

Dianne Jamison, PhD, RN, School of Nursing, Saint Xavier University, Illinois, IL, USA and Mary Muse, MS, RN, Nursing, Cermak Health Services of Cook County, Chicago, IL, USA.
Learning Objective #1: Describe potential and actual health care delivery opportunities in a correctional environment
Learning Objective #2: Share the process and outcome of a partnership between a correctional health facility and a school of nursing

Nursing leaders are realizing that there is a need to identify non-traditional environments as clinical sites for student learning. Current and future nurses will practice in a variety of community based settings given the ongoing trend of cost containment. This reality has led to a shift in the types of settings needed to prepare students to practice in an evolving industry of health care. This presenter will describe correctional health nursing as a specialty and include opportunities for students in the areas of community, public and mental health. With the high numbers of individuals incarcerated and the increasing age of this population, health professionals will need to address issues of chronic illness. The uniqueness and broad scope of health care delivery makes corrections an ideal environment for student learning. The presenter will share the experiences of a collaborative effort between the two organizations.
