Parse's (1998) human becoming theory guides nurses in their practice and reearch to be open to the complexity and mystery which is being human. the theory posits that life as it is lived, and all human encounters, are paradoxical. That which is present with us is also at the same time absent to us. Artist, such as Pablo Picasso, depicted multiple perspectives, including that which is interior, in his art. By so doing he avoided reductionism to unmask assumptions. Toward similar ends, and to facilitate the building of diverse relationships, groups of nurses from Canada and the United States, who practice from Parse's human becoming theory, represented paradoxical rhythms from the theory in collages with photographs and drawing (November, 20020. The paradoxes that were explored in the collages which are included here are connecting-separating, enabling-limiting, and revealing-concealing. Photographs of three of the posters from the conference, were made into prints and combined to represent core experiences of living among nurses living the human becoming theory. While interpretation remains with each viewer, one meaning of the work is that images of terrorism mingle with heroism amid the joy-sorrow of mutual caring, while eyes are both open and closed. At the same time, images of the past, present and future overlap with one another in unity and tension. The authors of this presentation would like to thank the nurses who shared their art and hearts with us.
