These poems I chose for the conference because they reflect the many stages and places I have been in as a nurse. When looking through my work for an appropriate submission, I avoided those with an overly religious or political orientation, or those overly pessimistic about my work, or overly personal about my life. These seven seem to hang together as a group very nicely in chronological order, from my first days out of school to my time as a doctoral student embarking upon a research career. Many of them are strongly evocative of the ward and hospital where I worked, and I believe the emotion I am evoking will touch many nurses as familiar to them. I am not a poet; I am a nurse who writes poems, so I submit these with absolute humility. They are far better read aloud than presented on a cold, sterile page, but I welcome the opportunity to have nurses read them, as they are surely lost on the non-nurse reader.
