The work is a poem describing essential characteristics of the whole person needed for a full and happy life. It applies to nursing because nurses are concerned with healing the whole person, and not only the physical imbalances. All areas of the whole person (biological, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual) affect the health of the individual. Nurses must remember the importance of nurturing all areas of the whole person to enhance the life of individuals, as well as the lives of families and communities. Nurses must also cultivate the well being of their own whole person in order to provide high-quality care.
