Leon

M. Cecilia Wendler, RN, PhD, CCRN, Department of Nursing Systems, Department of Nursing Systems, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, Eau Claire, WI, USA

Nurses are extraordinary storytellers, especially when they share the experiences of extraordinary patients and their families. Often communicated orally, informally, in classrooms and in break rooms everywhere, these stories teach, express nursing culture and illustrate with clarity just what is important to nurses. We celebrate through storytelling, express our grief through storytelling, and capture our own growth and development through story. This narrative, Leon, is both an exemplar of primary nursing and a celebration of the storytelling tradition in nursing. Leon’s prolonged experience in a university-affiliated hospital illustrates the difficulties and small triumphs of being a technology-dependent, chronically critically ill patient in a fast-track ICU. Leon’s tale is a commemoration of the depth of his struggle to get well. His story…and ours…illuminates the incredible journey toward health and healing that clinical nurses have the privilege of witnessing every day.
