This collection of poetry was constructed for the reflective writings of first year nursing students in response to an assignment in their first health-oriented course. In this exercise, students were given several pre-selected topics to which they could share their feelings, thought and experiences. The belief that the written word is a powerful tool to unlock meaning and values was linked to the educational principles of presentation and communication and respect for self and others that can be strengthened through an aesthetic, artistic experience. These works were voluntarily resubmitted, edited, and printed in a collected work for each student and teacher as a memento of this inaugural semester. It was distributed on the last day of the first year in a ceremony of passage into the second year. The ongoing symbol of peer support, like mindedness among class mates, and pride in seeing their personal thoughts in print demonstrated the presence of the arts in nursing education, personal growth, and reflection.
