Impressions of Mental Health Nursing

Merryle Parns, MS, MSN, ARNP, CS, School of Nursing, School of Nursing, Barry University, Miami Shores, FL, USA

In holistic nursing self expression is a core component of practice. Utilizing artistic creation as a means of expressing the personal meaning of our practice is often neglected. This educator has developed a means of operationalizing this concept by utilizing it as a teaching strategy with nursing students.

Upon completion of the clinical component of Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students and their clinical instructor summarize the experience through an art form of their choice. This is shared in the last clinical conference.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity to implement the art of nursing through creative self expression in a course that is highly prescriptive with clearly defined parameters. This creative self expression encourages the student to look within and explore the personal meaning of this experience. Furthermore, it provides a catharsis and facilitates closure.

This poster presents a sampling of these creative expressions. It provides an opportunity to experience and appreciate the value in the Art of Nursing as an innovative approach to teaching.

Objectives:

1. To increase appreciation of the arts as a means of self expression in the practice of nursing. 2. To value creativity as a means of enhancing the holistic approach to nursing.
