Homage to New York

Cathy Peters, RN, MS, NP, USA

My collage, “Homage to New York”, is featured in photograph submitted to the “Heart of Nursing”. The original work is 24”x36”, and represents an act of hope and healing. “Homage” was created approximately six months after my volunteer work in New York City during the fall of 2001. I had saved piles of newspapers and magazines documenting the event, and for weeks I cut, pasted and remembered. Through the layering process I literally pieced together the experience in a way that is personally meaningful, and which also helped me to move beyond the sadness of September 11th. Unexpectedly, the collage became a vehicle for sharing what I learned with colleagues and students, both in formal presentations and small group discussions.

“Homage” represents the diversity of experiences, diversity of relationships, and diversity of perspectives, which are the amalgam of this world-changing event. As mentioned in the collage, the horrors of September 11th can educate us all about diversity, fairness and tolerance. I believe these are key ingredients in building successful relationships.

A case study based on my volunteer work, as well as a copy of “Homage to New York”, will be featured in a text on disaster management scheduled for release in the summer of this year.
