I reflected back on her work. Although I had known her for only a small portion of that impressive career, I felt I had known her forever. She was always sharing some little tidbit of experience, a quip of conversation, or a reassuring nod of understanding. It was as if I had been by her side in all those scenes. Yet, in her words of wisdom, there was a presence of genuine acceptance couched in a gentle nudge toward a higher goal. A goal that only later did you fully recognize as your own. Was it embedded in her heart? Her soul? The touch of her hand? How was it that she fostered the uniqueness in each of us? The real gift would be for us to pass it further along. If she had done her job, the colors would stand alone and also blend like the early skies of a Montana sunrise.
To achieve excellence is remarkable. To share excellence is rare. In honor of remarkable and rare contributions to nursing excellence, a quilt was designed and created for Associate Professor and Campus Director Sharon Hovey for her retirement. Highlighted in the colors of Montana State University, the symbolic heart is used to boldly depict her knowledge, vision, and expertise in nursing practice, education and administration. Her transference washes through the many professional “hands” she touched. Each retaining a tidbit, quip, or nod to pass on; each unique and different, yet part of the whole of the campus community; each focused upward and ascending to continue the passage. We are privileged to be part of her nurturing goal.
