"Expressions of Healing" is a fabric quilt that was made by a group of 22 BSN nursing students and the faculty who taught the course Holistic Nursing: Practicing Healthy Living and Healing. In this course students are taught that holism is a way of being and that holistic healing incorporates integrative modalities to heal the mind, body, and spirit. To help students experience the power of a healing community, the faculty led the class in creating a healing quilt. The group discussed examples of community healing rituals such as healing prayer circles, music oriented memorials, the creation of a piece of art or script for a play. One of the course requirements was for the group to engage in an activity that would promote a healing intention. This class decided to create a fabric quilt. Each student painted a square that told a story of either a personal healing experience, or one that represented the healing of someone they know. Class time was used to paint the squares and sew the quilt together. Upon completion of the quilt the class had a day of celebration: Students told stories expressed in their painted squares and reflected on the process in working with a community to express healing experiences. Through this process students were able to experience the energetic power of working together, and they discussed their ideas for how to engage future patients and families in the healing potential of creative processes.
