Caring in the Face of Alzheimer's

Constance Twyman, RN, MSN, Department of Nursing, Department of Nursing, Alvernia College, Reading, PA, USA

This work is a pencil sketch enhanced with watercolors on a colored background. The face of the patient exhibits sadness and bewilderment in his loss of memory of people and things. The caregiver’s hands encircle the patient’s face to encourage eye contact in a gesture of affection and care and form a heart shaped pattern. The intent is to put a face and feelings to the knowledge of symptoms in the study of the disease process.
