There to Care: A Lesson From Nursing History
Learning Objective #1: Discuss the vulnerability of nurses as they engage in some professional care giving activities
Learning Objective #2: Describe the findings from research with Vietnam nurse veterans that support the potential psychological trauma associated with certain high risk populations
Nurses work within a unique framework as critical thinkers, caregivers and supporters. The nature of this work exposes nurses to patients at their most vulnerable times. While the outcomes realized through nursing efforts can be exhilarating, there may be an unbidden price to pay. This session will look at the emotional vulnerability of nurses. Using the data from a study conducted with Vietnam nurse veterans, we will explore the possible trauma associated with our willingness to be “there to care”. We will celebrate the contribution of nursing and look at how we can preserve and protect the nature of our work and the individuals who carry it out.
