Cynthia Haugsdal, RN, CNP and Sandra Clawson, RN, CNP. OB/Gyn Department, Albert Lea Medical Center, Albert Lea, MN, USA
Learning Objective #1: Define a collaborative NP/MD practice and describe associated benefits |
Learning Objective #2: Describe four targeted NP prenatal visits and the key assessments and education covered at these visits |
The primary goal of prenatal care is to promote the best possible outcome – a healthy baby and a healthy mother. This goal requires a coordinated approach that includes early intervention and a comprehensive plan of care with a focus on both medical care and psychosocial support. The nurse practitioner, when partnered with the obstetrician, is uniquely prepared to enhance the quality of OB care by providing patient education together with patient assessments and management before, during and after the pregnancy. Collaborative strategies involving doctors and nurse practitioners have been reported in the literature to be accepted by patients and offer improved patient care and satisfaction. This presentation will describe a model of collaborative care provided to the obstetrical patient utilizing the skill and expertise of both the obstetrician and the nurse practitioner along with a team of allied support staff. The Prenatal Care Plus model includes four targeted visits with the nurse practitioner. These visits will be discussed in detail with reference to educational highlights, identification of risk, health prevention and strategies for patient-centered care. Finally, we will explore areas where this model could be expanded, including preconception and postpartum.
