Implementation of a Study Abroad Program for Nursing Students
Linda Johanson, RN, EdD, Division of Nursing, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, NC, USA
Learning Objective #1: Conceptualize the process for organizing a study abroad program for nursing students
Learning Objective #2: Appreciate the value of programs that enhance cultural awareness and sensitivity of nursing students

Study abroad programs can enhance cultural awareness and sensitivity of nursing students and help prepare them to care for a multicultural clientele. This poster outlines the efforts at our Christian College in the foothills of North Carolina to organize and initiate a meaningful study abroad course for the nursing students to Merida, Mexico. The poster is divided into three sectors. In the organizational sector content is presented such as needs assessment, resource assessment, collaboration with International Studies Department, and advertising and fundraising. In the implementation section there is a photograph collage of the projects and activities embraced during the ten day trip, as well as a description of how the syllabus objectives were met. In the evaluation section hints are offered (based on this experience) for the implementation of a successful study abroad opportunity for nursing students, including how we hope to enhance and broaden the program for next year.
