Role Synthesis Day: The NURSE
Mary Asher, RN, MSN, CS, CPAN, University of Miami School of Nursing, Coral Gables, FL, USA

When nursing students enter their first clinical experiences they are often overwhelmed by the environment of nursing. As a way of helping students put into words their intial experiences in the clinical setting, this teacher had them write poetry. Each student was given the word "NURSE" written vertically on a piece of paper. They were instructed to think about what they had seen and learned throughout the semester. Using the word "NURSE" each student was asked to reflect and describe the profession they were studying. They were allowed to write freestyle, whatever came into their minds. What follows is a collection of poems written by junior nursing students in their fundamental nursing course in a bacclareate program in the fall of 2005.
