Over the past few decades there has been an initiative for nursing to become a research-based profession. Evidence exists to support that patients receiving nursing interventions based on research have a better outcome compared to those receiving non research based interventions. However, there are many barriers to nursing developing a true evidenced based practice foundation in the Gulf. If nursing is to become a truly professional discipline in its own right, then nurses must become interested and begin to base practice on evidence rather than less scientific grounds.

Methods:

A workshop has been developed where 200 nurse leaders from the Gulf attend to deliberate the concepts and principles of evidence based practice, differentiate between conducting research, research utilization and evidence based practice, discuss the various model for evidence based practice and how the evidence based practice can be integrated in practice and be part of quality improvement program. The group divided into small groups to identify the barrier to evidence based practice in the Gulf, develop strategies for implementing evidence based in the Gulf and develop a model for evidence based practice in the Gulf.

Results and conclusion:

The synthesis of the different group discussion in regard to the barrier to evidence based practice in the Gulf, the strategies for evidence based implementation in the different country in the Gulf and the proposed Gulf model for nursing evidence based practice will be presented.
