Abstract

Experience as a critical care and home health nurse inspired this piece of creative non-fiction. In the critical care unit, nurses commonly observe humans exist, so to speak, between life and death. Too often, it seemed, I would watch helplessly as patients who were the same age as I was, die. And often, also, patients would tell me when the day of their passing would be. I remember one home health patient tell me of her time in the next life, and how she looked forward to returning there.
