Healing Begins
Peggy Flauta, RN, BSN, Quail Surgical Center, Reno, NV, USA

Post-anesthesia nursing is fast and technical. When the patient arrives, even before the patient arrives, a cascade of predictable and unpredictable events emerges. Thus begins the dance between patient and nurse: practiced and natural in this unnatural setting. Patient acts, nurse responds, patient reacts, nurse adapts. Each one's behavior and stance is dynamic and affects the other. So much is conveyed in a gesture, a moan, or a simple touch. From the beginning, the nurse's task is simple: create a caring environment, one that fosters renewal and healing.
