A Community Partnership to Prevent Obesity in Preschool Children

The global epidemic of childhood obesity illustrates the compelling need for health promotion initiatives that specifically focus on children. Children who are obese are at risk for social stigmatization and negative health consequences such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension. To battle this epidemic, nursing faculty entered into a unique statewide collaboration aimed at preventing obesity in preschool children. Collaborating partners included an Early Learning Center (ELC), the health and prevention division of a children's hospital, and multidisciplinary faculty from a university. The ELC has an enrollment of 237 children ages 6 weeks to five years of age. The health and prevention division, a separate entity of the hospital, has a mission to work with the community to develop, pilot and expand childhood illness prevention strategies and health promotion activities. University faculty from the departments of nursing, education, nutrition, exercise science, and physical therapy participated. Participants collaborated to decide on program content, delivery, and evaluation. Interventions aimed at children, parents, and teachers focused on changing the child care environment to increase physical activity and promote healthy eating. Goals were to pilot the program in the ELC before statewide implementation, and enlist policy makers from both the local and state levels to support a healthy lifestyle for all children. This presentation focuses on this unique community collaboration to battle childhood obesity in preschool children.
