Clinical session – An innovative approach to providing health education at an Early Learning Center.

In an effort to promote the Healthy People 2010 objectives, faculty and graduate students developed an innovative collaborative approach for early childhood health education. A university early learning center opened as a model multidisciplinary teaching learning center for children and university students. The goal of nursing was to promote health education among children and their families. To meet this goal a Health Resource Center was developed to provide health information, programs and services based on the needs of the families and center staff. The resource center solicited existing materials from local and national organizations. The collaboration led to offering established programs. To test the value of the programs help was sought from early childhood development specialists to develop an effective tool for program evaluation. To further the health information dissemination a monthly newsletter was distributed to all families and staff of the early learning center. The topics are related to health issues and healthy lifestyle pertinent to the month. Distribution of the newsletter was expanded to other preschools. A website and phone line was established for the university community to ask questions related to health. The site served as a clinical experience for undergraduate and graduate students offering programs in conjunction with community agencies. Graduate students are collaborating with other university departments to pursue multidisciplinary approaches to issues impacting health. At the end of each semester, evaluations are conducted and the information used to continue to fulfill the mission. The programs have been so successful that the website development was funded by a state education grant. This presentation focuses on the growing collaboration between the community, the university departments and the nursing faculty and students. The potential for continued expansion and collaborative partners is unlimited.
