Fostering Critical Thinking Through Concept Map Care Planning
Arlene Mae Saliba, RN, MS, NP and Nancy A. Carter, RN, MS. Nursing, Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI, USA
Learning Objective #1: Utilize concept map care planning to foster critical thinking in clinical situations |
Learning Objective #2: Track the student's growth in critical thinking as the student matriculates through the nursing program |
Schuster (2002) states that a concept map care plan "is an innovative approach to planning and organizing nursing care." During the process of concept map care planning, critical thinking is used to build on the knowledge one has to devise clinical judgment and make decisions about nursing care (Schuster). Relationships of the concepts that affect the care of the patient are linked in a cause and effect manner (Harpaz, Balik & Ehrenfeld). The purpose of this poster presentation is to show growth in critical thinking as the students move through sophomore, junior, and senior classes.
