Applying Mindfulness-based Approaches to Care

This presentation will describe the neurobiological basis underpinning the principles and premises of a mindfulness-based approach to care. A review of clinical research supporting the utilization of mindfulness-based practices will be covered. The presenter will discuss indications for mindfulness-based approaches, including chronic medical illnesses, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Discussion of the clinical application of this approach in the promotion, restoration, and maintenance of physical and mental well-being will be provided. The presenter will describe the essential components of a practice committed to cultivating mindfulness, including physical environment, individual assessment, treatment planning and outcomes. Finally, the presenter will briefly discuss mindfulness-based practice exemplars in oncology and mental health.
