Abstract

Title

Intentional Healing Practice Model

Description

The Intentional Healing Practice Model (IHP) is an evidence – based project investigating the effect that education and theory – guided caring has on pain management.

The purpose of this evidence – based pilot project is to investigate the effect of a theory guided, collaborative healthcare practice model, has on pain management for hospitalized patients.

The Intentional Healing Practice Model integrates concepts from several theoretical frameworks to form a multifaceted approach to pain management. Inadequate knowledge of pain has lead to a primary focus on the biological and physiological, while diminishing the importance of a multidisciplinary perspective including; psychological, caring and spiritual dimensions, and ultimately leads to inadequate pain management(McGrath & Hiller, 1996; Melzack, 1999). The Intentional Healing Practice Model attempts to provide a unifying theory of pain management that includes a theoretical caring framework based on Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the Neuromatrix Theory of Pain Management developed by Melzack. The integration of intentional healing, complimentary care, and evidence –based pain management practice is currently being implemented in a surgical department setting. The goal is to overcome barriers that prevent adequate pain management.

This project will be measured by patient satisfaction scores, nurse satisfaction scores, VAS scores, medical records, questionairres, focus group participation, nurse recordings and observataion.

This project will not be completed by the conference date; however, data will be available for analysis of the project. Clarification of the Intentional Healing Practice Model will be defined in the presentation.

Goals include; improved pain management practice, decreased suffering of patients, and intentional healing awareness for caregivers. The results from this project will be used to guide more extensive research on pain management practice.
