Learning Objective #1: Demonstrate understanding of the action of nursing leaders
Learning Objective #2: Identify nursing leadership qualities and the importance of self-reflection as a means to positively impact the nursing profession

Abstract An extensive literature review examining action, philosophies, and careers of nursing leaders has been conducted. The learner will attain knowledge and understanding of the action of three nursing leaders. With knowledge and understanding of the action, philosophies, and careers of nursing leaders, the learner is encouraged to self-reflect and explore means of which they can also positively impact the nursing profession. Daniel Pesut, Luther Christman, and Tim Porter-O'Grady were the leaders investigated in this study. All three nursing leaders have contributed to the advancement of the nursing profession. Pesut is currently the president of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Pesut advocates for a “renewal” in nursing through encouraging nurses to overcome the decrease in hope and confidence and the increase in career discontent among nurses. Pesut inspires nurses to spread seeds of enthusiasm and creativity within the workplace. Christman strives to strengthen the nursing profession by increasing diversity and by arguing for Baccalaureate degree as the standard entry level into nursing practice. Christman also has implemented advanced clinical degree programs, which are now common practice in the field of nursing. Porter-O'Grady believes nurses to be health care's greatest value and argues against any reduction of the utilization of nurses. Porter-O'Grady challenges nurses to be proactive in decision-making processes, which affects the role of the nurse. Pesut, Christman, and Porter-O'Grady are role models for any nurse wishing to impact their profession. This presentation will highlight the findings related to the examination of these three nurse leaders.
