Is There a Bully on Your Unit? Understanding Bully Behavior and How to Stop It
Susan Lynne Ahrens, RN, PHD, STICU, Parkview Hospital-Randallia, Fort Wayne, IN, USA
Learning Objective #1: Assess a group and determine if bullying is a factor affecting morale
Learning Objective #2: Determine the type of bullying that is happening and develop strategies to deal with the negative behavior

Maintaining a group of experienced and caring nursing staff can be a challenge for anyone in a leadership position. It is also essential for ensuring that the nursing care delivered is of the highest quality (reference). An individual (manager or staff) who bullies other staff memebers on a regular basis can undermine the morale of any group (reference). Recognizing and intervening to deal with bullying behavior in the work setting can drastically improve morale.

This presentation will discuss the negative impact of bullying and provide nursing leaders with strategies to identify and reduce the negative impact of bullies.
