Rita Norlin, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Director for Clinical and Patient Education, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Learning Objective #1: Describe the components of a comprehensive new nursing graduate educational support program
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the new nursing graduate educational support program

The purpose of this presentation is to describe the New Nursing Graduate Educational Support Program at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

This innovative program provides educational support, nurturing support, and mentoring support through a variety of approaches. These include formal classroom and coursework designed to assist the new nursing graduate in preparing for successful NCLEX-RN completion; programs created to acculturate the novice registered nurses to Mayo Clinic policies, processes, and philosophies; orientation to the clinical units with support from experienced preceptors and program faculty, and; celebration throughout.

The presentation will discuss the budgetary, facilities, and programmatic considerations in providing a new nursing graduate support program. The detailed planning processes, implementation, and program evaluation will be presented, describing the overwhelming successes and identified opportunities for improvement.

Participant evaluations have consistently demonstrated that the program has far exceeded expectations. High NCLEX-RN first time pass rates and low one-year new graduate turnover rates have been demonstrated. The word-of-mouth advertising from program graduates has been favorable for Mayo Clinic as evidenced by the excellent candidate pool at each cohort cycle.
