Learning Objective #1: Describe the three Rs of Relationship-Based Care
Learning Objective #2: Describe key strategies to teach leadership skills for this type of practice

This session will identify key strategies to teach Leadership for Relationship Based Practice. This type of practice delivery involves the care delivery system, leadership and team work and is based on the belief that professional nursing practice is about a responsibility relationship, not about completing a series of tasks. Furthermore, that if care tasks aren't done in the context of this therapeutic relationship, they aren't professional nursing practice...no matter how complex they are. Leadership is the key to successful Relationship Based Care.

Abstract:

The 'Three R's' of Relationship Based Practice are Roles, Relationships, and Resources. Clarity of role responsibility and authority, healthy interpersonal relationships and new ways of thinking about resources are essential learnings for this type of practice. This presentation will thoroughly explain the Three R's and provide suggested strategies (rather than curriculum changes) for incorporating these understandings in education at both the basic and graduate levels. Since leadership is recognized as a skill (rather than a personality characteristic), it can be taught both didactically and experientially. Effective self management and healthy interpersonal relationships are the core of good team work, and key components of this type of relationship will to be thoroughly explained and demonstrated. This presentation will challenge existing mind-sets about the relationship between resources and patient care needs and suggest new ways of thinking about resource utilization.
