Learning Objective #1: Understand the impact of health policy decisions on access to prenatal care. |
Learning Objective #2: Describe The process in the Chiron Mentoring Program |
Our Chiron Mentoring experience began with 3 ½ days at our head quarters in Indianapolis. The program is divided into 3 phases. During the initial phase of the program, mentee/mentor pairs met to facilitate the beginning of a relationship focusing on the development of a scholarly project. My mentor helped me develop a leadership program that promises to improve health outcomes for pregnant women in a targeted underserved community in Houston, Texas. Specific measurable goals were developed along with a realistic time frame for implementation throughout the next year. Specifically, I was able to identify issues related to access to adequate prenatal care. A literature review was performed to identify factors associated with barriers of access to prenatal care. Next I attended the Washington Health Policy Institute at George Mason University to increase my knowledge about health policy and its impact on access to health care. Lastly, I became involved in both local and state maternal child health advocacy groups whose focus was on access to prenatal care. It was within these groups that I was able to influence access issues for the population of women that I serve. The second phase of the program involved regular contact with my mentor throughout the year who provided an opportunity for feedback, continued reflection and support with her project. The final phase will culminate in a scholarly activity including an abstract submission and presentation on this project. Xi chapter will be recognized for supporting the mentoring of a fellow member of Sigma Theta Tau. Without the framework of the Chiron program I would have not been linked to my mentor who provided the guidance and encouragement during my professional development. In the end, STTI and this program have had a positive effect on my professional growth and the women that I serve.
