Exploring New Frontiers Using King's Theory of Goal Attainment
Learning Objective #1: Provide an overview of applications and extension of King's Theory of Goal Attainment
Learning Objective #2: Identify areas that would maximize the contribution of administration, practice and research applications using King's Theory of Goal Attainment
This symposium will present the application and extension of King’s Conceptual System and Theory of Goal Attainment for nursing administration, academia and clinical practice. The topics will include areas that maximize the contribution of administration, practice and research and examine the potential for future ongoing contributions. King’s Goal Attainment Theory closely fits with nursing process and classification system such as nursing diagnoses, interventions and outcomes. Recording outcomes is critical to evidence-based practice. The Transactional Process is derived from the concepts of perception, communication, interaction and transaction, representing theoretical knowledge that is used for Mutual Goal Setting. Several examples of application for King's Goal Attainment Model will include The Theory of Group Power in developing leadership strategies to improve a group’s power; Congruence between Multisystemic Therapy and Conceptual System; Mentoring of nurse leaders/staff to conduct nursing research studies based on King's concepts; and management of nurse role performance competencies to improve specific Client Satisfaction Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC)s.
