Building Leadership Capacity: Career Coaching as a Strategy for RNs and BSN Students |
Learning Objective #1: Describe the role of career coaching in developing leadership capacity of RNs and BSN students |
Learning Objective #2: Describe the advantages of using various career coaching strategies with different populations |
Career coaching is an individualized approach to building leadership capacity and achieving organizational goals (Savage,2001). Research about career coaching in business has demonstrated increased organizational productivity, manager retention, and job satisfaction (Manchester, 2001). Recently career coaching has been introduced into nursing settings (Savage, 2001; Carroll & Austin, 2004). This presentation will provide an overview of career coaching as a leadership developement strategy using examples from a tertiary care level one trauma center and a federally funded workforce diversity initiative for baccalaureate nursing students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Career coaching was initiated at Memorial Hermann Hospital and Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital to provide employees with mentoring for their professional developement. The career coach provides support to busy managers and educators by assisting staff in selecting a nursing program, completing admission applications, preparing abstracts and manuscripts for presentations and publications and supporting employees through role changes, displacements and re-assignments. The career coach is an active member of the education department, assists with curriculum development, acts as a mentor to educators, and provides career coaching to nurse interns to spark their interest in nursing specialty certifications and continuing education.
Career coaching in an academic setting was initiated within the project Consortium for Advancing Nursing Diversity and Opportunities (CANDO). CANDO has maximized the resources of three baccalaureate nursing programs to provide a select group of students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a variety of enhancement actitivities to improve timely program completion. The purpose of career coaching within this context is to assist students with identifying and planning for a preferred future within nursing to include roles such as clinical leaders, managers, and educators. Strategies used include assigned mentoring, career previews and use of CareeRxel with follow-up coaching on job search, resume preparation and interviewing. |
