Because multilingual and multicultural societies will become a norm of the 21st century in the United States, accurate, scientific translation is essential in nursing research, practice, and education.
At Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, we serve a population that is 40 to 50% Latino. In assessing our resources and literature for non-English speaking patients, we found that translations were often provided by non-experts. When studied, these translations did not accurately translate meaning nor did they meet readability standards. As a result, we created a Spanish Translation Program which provides scientific translation to the professional community.
Translation must focus on content validity and readability. There are three types of translation metods that can be used to translate materials from a source language to another language. These are translation / back translation, translation by committee using a focus group technique, and expert translation. The authors will review types of translation and give exemplars for areas of research, education, and practice.
Another focus of scientific translation is research. Because many research instruments are in English, often non-English speaking populations are excluded from research. The authors will relate their experiences in using scientific translation to create psychometrically sound research instruments to be used in non-English speaking populations.
