Learning Objective #1: Understand the concept of empowerment use in nursing administration
Learning Objective #2: Apply the empowerment program to increase staff's job satisfaction

The purposes of this quasi-experimental research were to study the effects of empowerment program by head nurses on nursing performance feedback and job satisfaction of staff nurses. Research samples were 334 staff nurses from 48 Nursing units dividing into 2 groups : 169 for a treatment group and 165 for a control group. Kanter’s theory of empowerment was used to develop empowerment program. Staff nurses in the treatment group participated in a 8-week empowerment program which emphasized on receiving support, information, resources, and opportunities from the head nurse. Comparison of pre- and post-survey data of nursing performance feedback and job satisfaction indicated that staff nurses in the treatment group increased the level of receiving performance feedback from the head nurse, and reported a higher level of job satisfaction including work achievement, recognition, job characteristics, and responsibility. Findings concerning empowerment are presented in two areas: (1) resolution of head nurse’s roles from directing to supporting roles and (2) concerning needs of staff nurses. Based on the results of this study, Nursing organizations attempting to improve staff nurses’ job satisfaction should encourage head nurses to provide empowerment programs to their staff. In addition providing feedback of nursing performance is good solution for staff nurses to improve their self and their work.
