The Effects of Postpartum Home Visitation and Telephone Consultation of Maternal Child Health

Ching-Min Chen, DNS, School of Nursing, School of Nursing, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan
Learning Objective #1: Demonstrate the scientific measures in effects of community postpartum care
Learning Objective #2: Develop the knowledge of evidence-based nursing

The length of hospital stay for postpartum mothers and their newborn infants has been decreased since the implementation of NHI in Taiwan. A standard of care addressing the postpartum needs with a shortened hospital stay, however, has not been established. The purpose of this project is to explore the impact of nurse home visitation and telephone consultation programs on maternal child health, and to provide a research-demonstrated model on evidence-based nursing. This three-year project will utilize both descriptive correlational design, cohort study in phase one; and randomized controlled trial, longitudinal follow-up study in phase two. Subjects will be recruited from postpartum units in three hospitals in Taipei with separate data collection sections. Inclusion criteria includes: having experienced no complications during pregnancy or immediately afterward; and having given birth to newborn who had no diagnosed or visible complications or anomalies. In phase one, a standard care plans addressing the postpartum needs of mothers, newborns, and families will be developed and instruments will be validated. The second phase of this study will compare the effects of community support interventions: nurse home visitation and telephone consultation programs from birth to the children°¦s second birthdays. The estimated subjects number will be 30 subjects for each group, and 90 for the total. Impacts of the programs will be measured by physiological health (biochemical data, health promotion lifestyle, feeding status, postpartum examination and family planning), cognitive health (parental caregiving self-efficacy and home environmental safety observation), child health (infant development, behavioral problems, children°¦s immunization rates), and care satisfaction (postpartum care priorities and satisfaction).
