Using the Internet to Facilitate Nursing Research

Kathleen LeClear O'Connell, PhD, RN, School of Health Sciences, School of Health Sciences, Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne, IN, USA
Learning Objective #1: Discuss the various possibilities for survey development and distribution, sample recruitment, data analysis, and research dissemination using the Internet
Learning Objective #2: Identify specific resources available for nurses who want to implement research using the Internet

The Internet has opened up a multitude of opportunities for communicating with people. For nurse researchers, the Internet can be used to advertise and solicit participants for studies, conduct studies through the use of computerized forms of surveys, and disseminate the research once completed. This presentation will identify and discuss the ways in which the Internet is being incorporated into nursing research. The possibilities as well as the challenges of using this new methodology will be discussed. Participants will also learn about the range of resources available for nurses who want to implement research using the Internet. This paper was originally presented to an audience of European and Australian nurses at Oxford University in 9/02.
