Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are major health problems in the United States. The goals of the Center for Research on Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health (CRCRH) are to advance the nursing science of cardiovascular and respiratory health, reduce disparities in disease/illness and support faculty research training. The work of the CRCRH is accomplished through three research Cores (a) Multi-ethnic Emphasis, (b) Biobehavior Methods and (c) Development and Dissemination. The Multi-ethnic Emphasis Core promotes the development of culturally competent research in under-served multi-ethnic communities with emphasis on the African American Community. This is accomplished by organizing programs to increase investigator awareness of cultural issues, developing partnerships with selected ethnic communities in Chicago and consulting with investigators on cultural issues. The Biobehavioral Methods Core provides services and resources to CRCRH investigators regarding measurement, data management and data analysis. This Core maintains a data bank for old data sets and a compendium of biobehavioral measures. It provides laboratory services for selected biological assays. The Development and Dissemination Core funds pilot studies and links authors with clinical journals to disseminate research to the clinical audience. The Center organizes three research interest groups: Exercise, Multi-ethnic/Cultural Explorations, and Stress. Combining cardiovascular and respiratory health research in a single center promotes interactions between and collaboration among these researchers. For example, CRCRH investigators are working on a project to assess the impact of fatigue on people with cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Outcomes of the CRCRH include the funding of seven pilot studies, an increase in interdisciplinary collaboration for research, augmentation of the awareness of cultural issues in research, and increasing the number of clinical publications by researchers.

The CRCRH is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Grant Number: 5 P20 NR07812.
