Learning Objective #1: Identify strengths and weaknesses of Web-based smoking cessation information in Korea that was analyzed using suitability assessment criteria
Learning Objective #2: Infer effective content development strategies from this study that result in improved quality of health information delivered by the Internet

Objectives : To examine how health professionals perceive web-based health information suitable; what about them health professional perceive positive; what about them health professional perceive negative.

Design : A descriptive-correlational design study.

Population : Web-based health information written by Korean .

Sample & Setting : Topic of health information for this study was limited to smoking cessation. 4 web sites were selected based on the credibility of the organization behind the web sites.

Variables : Suitability was examined assessing 6 sub-variables : writing style, scope, advance organizers, behavior information, context information, cultural appropriateness.

Methods : Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) (Dock, Dock & Root, 1996) was used to develop assessment criteria appropriate in Korean situation. Self-reported questionnaires were used and 59 school health nurses enrolled in a continuing education program were participated in this assessment process.

Findings : Study results indicated that suitability score was moderate in general. (M=3.20, SD=.54, Range 1 – 5). Total suitability score of the health information which described principles, such as, nicotine’s effects on human body was low (M=2.71, SD=.97), while score of information which described simple fact was relatively high. (M=3.58, SD=.84). Among the 6 sub-variables, scores of using advance organizer and context information were low. Score of writing style, however, was high. Study results indicated that participants who had more positive attitude toward internet and spent more time to search health information through internet perceived the information less suitable.

Conclusions : Web-based smoking cessation information in Korea was perceived moderately suitable by school health nurses. Lack of advance organizer and context information were identified as weakness, while writing style was perceived as strength.

Implication : To develop suitable web-based health information, using advance organizer and context information is strongly recommended in addition to good writing style.
