A Field Study of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in a community after Typhoon Rusa

In South Korea, as growing the need of psychological support in disaster situation, psychological assessment on stress is important to find out the factors affecting on the coping, and to plan intervention.
The volunteers of Korea redcross who live around impact area and have acted, or research team visited all homes at Jirye town, one of the high-impact area, at 4 month after typhoon. One of the family members over 18 years old, answered the self-report questionnaire composed of damage, exposure to traumatic event, and posttraumatic stress with IES-K (Impact of Event Scale-korea, chronbach's alpha=.93) He also, described his family member's symptoms related to re-experiencing, hyper-arousal, avoidance. 600(62.2%) households were surveyed, 1101 adults were described.
The prevalence of moderate to severe PTSD symptom was 36% of the subjects. The severity of PTSD was different as sex(T=-3.12*), economic status(T=-2.34*), damaged property (F=19.778*), physical injury (T=-3.32*), worsening existing disease(T=-10.025*), getting infectious disease (T=-3.00*), amount of experienced traumatic event before disaster (F=13.6*), warning(T=-2.07*), taking shelter(T=-4.04*) , and subjects revealed differences in somatization as severity of PTSD. (T=-10.857*). According to describing, community members had re-experiencing (48.8%), hyper-arousal (43.4%) and avoidance (36.6%).
At a rural area, South Korea, community residents have suffered from psychological distress. So psychological interventions are required as affecting factors and also, plan for warning and a shelter in disaster situation is needed for preventing from PTSD.
